Research lines of RAPEAS research groups on Geomagnetism.

Dpto. Ciencias de la Atmósfera del Instituto Antártico Argentino (IAA):

“Magnetosphere” is the research line referred to Geomagnetism.

The lines of the earth’s magnetic field attract “solar wind” particles and its “flares”, or solar stains. When this flow gets massively  in  high latitude areas ( Belgrano Base, San Martín Base) it causes strong disruption in ionospheric layers and magnetic field.

The specific aim is to increase knowledge of energetic transfer from interplanetary space into the atmosphere and establish the sources of disruption observed in antarctic bases during antarctic campaigns.

Equipment:

FLUXGATE magnetograph, EDA sensor head ( working since 1980 in Belgrano II Base and in San Martín Base since 1986)

RIOMETRO LA JOLLA SCIENCE (Belgrano II and San Martín Bases)

KEL IPS42 AEROESPACE IONOSOUNDER OF VERTICAL INCIDENCE (Belgrano II and San Martín Bases)

Group: Physics Department of  FACET-UNT, formed by  Ana G. Elias, Marta Zossi de Artigas, Gustavo A. Mansilla and Blas de Haro Barbas:

The effects of geomagnetic storms on mid and high atmosphere are studied at different latitudes. The aim of this research is to assess physical and chemical processes caused/ originated in strastosphere and ionosphere by solar wind particles which are injected in high latitudes during geomagnetic storms in the short term, in order to contribute to understanding variations in the long term.
